What were Ireland’s most popular Google searches in 2020?

This month, Account Manager Kate Finlay takes a look at what Irish people were searching for last year.

What a year it was, and the Google search results revealed the true cultural zeitgeist of the Irish population. Politics and Coronavirus were unsurprisingly hot topics in Ireland, reflecting global trends.

The US election in November topped the overall search list, with both presidential candidates also featuring on the list of most searched people. President-elect Joe Biden was the most searched person, and Donald Trump was in fifth behind Phillip Schofield, Kim Jong-un and Boris Johnson.

In second place for overall searches was the coronavirus. With that a “How To” flurry of searches for ‘how to make a face mask’ and ‘how to make hand sanitizer’. Following this was the much-used recipes searches with brown bread coming out on top, followed by scones, pizza dough, apple tart and soda bread.

Movie-wise, Sam Mendes’ film 1917 was the most searched on Google in Ireland during the year, followed by the South Korean hit Parasite, Little Women, JoJo Rabbit and Tenet. Normal People and Love Island hit the top searches for television.

Despite the highs and lows of 2020 Google has given insights to arm us with lots of cultural references for pub table quiz nights whenever that may be.
